Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas met with the President Xi Jinping and with Minister of Finance Lou Jiwei in Beijing today within the framework of his visit to China.

The meeting with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping focused on economic relations and opportunities to boost cooperation between Europe and Asia.

After this, Rõivas met with Minister of Finance of China with whom he discussed specific cooperation projects in the field of energy and the economic environment of Estonia.

At the request of the Minister of Finance, Rõivas introduced the cooperation projects of Estonian companies in China and the joint projects of the companies of the two countries in third countries. For example, Eesti Energia discusses funding opportunities for the power plant project based on Enefit oil shale technology in Jordan with the biggest banks of China.

Although the meeting lasted longer than initially planned, Lou also felt a lively interest in Estonia’s financial policy, financing of the social system, and reform experience. They also discussed the reforms that ensured the success of the Estonian tax system. At the meeting, Rõivas also invited the Minister of Finance to Estonia and Lou accepted this invitation.

In 2010, Forbes mentioned Minister of Finance Lou Jiwei in the list of 30 most influential people in the world. Lou has also been the head of China Investment Corporation with its assets amounting to approximately 650 billion dollars.
