EU launches series of art exhibitions focused on human rights (22/02/2016)
On 22 February, the Delegation of the European Union to China launched a series of art exhibitions on the theme of"Arts and human rights in China and the European Union". This first exhibition presents the works of 12 Chinese artists and looks, through the lens of human rights, at vulnerability as its main topic.
The series opened at the EU Delegation in Beijing in the presence of EU Ambassador to China Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, as well as diplomats, cultural stakeholders, European and Chinese artists. The exhibition has been facilitated by the Chinese Independent Artists Alliance and curated by Mr Zhu Qi.
Ambassador Schweisgut said: “The arts are unique in their ability to capture what is difficult to describe. We hope that through this series of art exhibitions Chinese and European artists will approach in an ever creative way questions of the rights of individuals and collectives and give new impetus to the debate about fundamental rights of individuals and groups”.
The project, financed under the EU's Partnership Instrument in collaboration with a number of EU member states' embassies, will organize a series of art exhibitions throughout 2016 featuring European and Chinese artists linked to discussions with a focus on human rights.
